Why this stadium matters
Before 2024, Sanfrecce Hiroshima played at Big Arch β a track-and-field stadium 40 minutes by bus from the city center. The front row was 20+ meters from the pitch. Attendance suffered. Then EDION Peace Wing opened in central Hiroshima, and everything changed.
The numbers
Capacity: 30,000. Distance from goal-end front row to pitch: about 7 meters. Roof coverage: approximately 85% of seats. Opened: February 2024. Cost: approximately Β₯28 billion ($185 million). Design: football-specific, no running track.
What 7 meters feels like
At Big Arch, the closest seat was 20+ meters from the playing surface. At Peace Wing, the goal-end front row is 7 meters from the corner flag. You can hear players call for the ball. You can see the spin on crosses. The difference between 20 meters and 7 meters is the difference between watching football and being inside football.
Location
Central Hiroshima. 5 minutes by tram from the Atomic Bomb Dome. 15-minute walk from JR Hiroshima Station. This is the key upgrade β the old stadium required a 40-minute bus ride. Now you can walk from Peace Memorial Park to the stadium in 10 minutes.
