Kyoto beyond temples
Most tourists visit Kyoto for its temples and geisha districts. But Kyoto also has a J1 League soccer team โ Kyoto Sanga FC โ and their stadium is perfectly positioned for a temple-and-soccer day trip that shows you a different side of this ancient city.
Sanga Stadium by KYOCERA
Opened in 2020, this modern soccer-specific stadium seats 21,600 fans. Located in Kameoka, just west of Kyoto, it's accessible by JR from Kyoto Station in about 20 minutes. The stadium is right next to JR Kameoka Station.
The perfect day plan
Morning (8:00-11:30)
Start early at Fushimi Inari Shrine (the famous red torii gates) โ it's best before 9:00 AM to avoid crowds. Then visit Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) or walk through the bamboo grove in Arashiyama.
Lunch (11:30-13:00)
Eat in Arashiyama โ tofu cuisine is a Kyoto specialty. Try yudofu (hot tofu) at one of the traditional restaurants along the river. Or grab matcha sweets at one of the many tea houses.
Travel to stadium (13:00-13:30)
From Arashiyama, take the JR Sagano Line directly to Kameoka Station (about 20 minutes). The stadium is a short walk from the station.
Match (14:00-16:00)
Enjoy the J-League match. Sanga Stadium has great sightlines from every seat. Try the local Kameoka beef croquettes at the food stalls.
Evening
Return to Kyoto for dinner in Pontocho alley or Gion district. If visiting during illumination season, evening temple visits are magical.
Tickets
Kyoto Sanga tickets are easy to get โ the team rarely sells out. Prices range from ยฅ2,500-5,000. Buy at the stadium or through J-League Ticket.
Summary
Temples in the morning, soccer in the afternoon, kaiseki dinner at night โ this is how to experience the real Kyoto in one unforgettable day.
