Tourists in Japan often debate which sport to watch. Sumo, baseball, and soccer each offer completely different experiences. Here's how they compare to help you choose โ or better yet, watch all three.
Sumo
Duration: All-day event (8:00 AM to 6:00 PM), but most fans arrive for the top-division bouts (3:00-6:00 PM). Atmosphere: Quiet, respectful, and ceremonial. The rituals are as important as the wrestling. Tickets: ยฅ3,800-14,800. Hard to get during Tokyo tournaments (January, May, September). Available in Osaka (March), Nagoya (July), and Fukuoka (November). Best for: Experiencing ancient Japanese tradition.
Baseball (NPB)
Duration: About 3 hours. Atmosphere: Energetic, musical, and food-focused. The organized cheering is a spectacle. Tickets: ยฅ1,500-8,000 (widely available). Best for: The most entertaining all-around experience. Great food, great atmosphere, and games are available almost every day from March to October.
Soccer (J-League)
Duration: About 2 hours (90 min + halftime). Atmosphere: European-style supporter culture โ intense, passionate, and tribal. Tickets: ยฅ2,000-5,000 (usually available). Best for: Experiencing passionate fan culture and regional identity.
