1. The ball is smaller

NPB baseballs are slightly smaller and lighter than MLB baseballs. The seams are raised higher. This affects grip, movement, and how far the ball travels. Pitchers in NPB throw more breaking balls partly because the smaller ball allows sharper spin.

2. Games can end in a tie

After 12 innings (9 in the regular season post-2024 rule change for some situations), if the score is tied, the game ends as a draw. Ties count in the standings. Americans find this baffling. Japanese fans accept it.

3. The stadiums are smaller

NPB parks seat 30,000-46,000, compared to MLB's 40,000-56,000. The smaller size means you're closer to the action in most seats. Foul territory is also smaller in many NPB parks.

4. The food is better

This isn't subjective. NPB stadium food includes regional specialties (Hiroshima okonomiyaki, Sendai beef tongue, Hokkaido seafood bowls), craft beer, and proper restaurant-quality meals. ES CON Field has 30+ restaurants and a craft brewery. MLB nachos and Bud Light can't compete.

5. Cheering is organized

No random "Let's go [team]" chants. Each batter has a personal song. Trumpet sections lead. The entire outfield section moves in unison. It's choreographed and impressive.

6. Beer vendors come to you

Young women carry kegs on their backs and pour fresh draft beer at your seat. You don't need to leave your seat or stand in line. Tips are not expected.

7. You can bring food in

Most NPB stadiums allow outside food. No MLB-style "clear bag only" policies. Convenience store bento boxes are a common sight.

8. The seventh-inning stretch is different

At Jingu Stadium, fans release jet balloons. At Koshien, they sing team songs. Every stadium has its own tradition. The generic "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" doesn't exist here.

9. Games move faster

NPB games average about 3 hours 10 minutes, similar to recent MLB with the pitch clock. But NPB felt faster even before MLB's clock because of tighter pace-of-play rules that have been in place for years.

10. The fans clean up after themselves

After the game, fans pick up their own trash. The stadium is nearly spotless by the time everyone leaves. No cleaning crew sweeping through rows of debris.

Buying tickets

NPB tickets are cheaper than MLB. Outfield seats start at $10-15. Infield reserved seats are $25-35. English-language ticket platforms accept international cards for most teams.
