Nagoya: underrated sports city
Nagoya often gets skipped by tourists rushing between Tokyo and Osaka, but it has excellent sports venues and some of Japan's most distinctive regional cuisine (Nagoya meshi).
Vantelin Dome Nagoya (Chunichi Dragons)
A classic dome stadium right in the city center. Nagoya Dome-mae Yada Station on the Meijo Line gets you there in minutes. Inside, you'll find miso katsu sandwiches, kishimen noodles, and tebasaki chicken wings โ all Nagoya specialties.
Toyota Stadium (Nagoya Grampus)
A large modern stadium in Toyota City, about 40 minutes from Nagoya Station. The stadium holds 45,000 fans and has excellent sight lines from every seat.
Nagoya meshi food tour
Nagoya has one of Japan's most unique food cultures. Must-try dishes: miso katsu (breaded pork with red miso sauce), hitsumabushi (grilled eel three ways), tebasaki (fried chicken wings), and kishimen (flat noodles). Most are available at the stadium too.
Why stop in Nagoya
Nagoya is perfectly positioned on the shinkansen line between Tokyo and Osaka (90 minutes to either). Adding a night in Nagoya for a Dragons game is an easy addition to any Japan itinerary.
Summary
Don't skip Nagoya. The food alone is worth a stop, and adding a baseball game makes it a memorable detour on your Japan trip.
