At a glance

NPB Baseball: Late March to October (playoffs through November). J-League Soccer: Late February to early December. B.League Basketball: October to May. SV.League Volleyball: October to April. The sweet spots for watching multiple sports are March-May and September-November.

January-February

Basketball and volleyball are in mid-season — great options for winter visitors. NPB spring training begins in February (free to watch in Okinawa and Miyazaki). Emperor's Cup volleyball tournament in January. J-League pre-season friendlies begin in February.

March-April

The best time for sports! NPB Opening Day (late March) coincides with cherry blossom season. J-League season kicks off. Basketball and volleyball are heading toward playoffs. Golden Week (late April/early May) has packed sports schedules.

May-June

B.League Finals (May) — the climax of basketball season. NPB and J-League in full swing. SV.League wraps up with finals in April/May. Rainy season (tsuyu) begins mid-June — dome stadiums are your friend.

July-August

NPB All-Star Game (July). High school baseball at Koshien (August) — a national obsession. J-League continues through summer. Summer fireworks nights at baseball stadiums. Very hot — plan for indoor/dome sports or night games.

September-October

NPB pennant race intensifies. J-League title race heats up. B.League new season opens (October). SV.League new season opens (October). The other sweet spot for multiple sports.

November-December

NPB Japan Series (November) — the championship. J-League final matchday and Emperor's Cup soccer. B.League and SV.League mid-season. Great time for indoor sports as weather cools.

Planning tip

Check specific team schedules 1-2 months before your trip. Weekends have the most games across all sports. Midweek games exist but are less guaranteed. Golden Week, Obon (August), and year-end holidays have special sporting events.
