Average game length
NPB games typically last about 3 hours and 10 minutes, slightly shorter than MLB games. However, games can run from 2 hours 30 minutes (quick pitching duels) to 4+ hours (extra-inning slug fests). The 12-inning limit means games never go on forever โ if tied after 12, it's a draw.
Typical game times
Weekday night games: First pitch at 6:00 PM, ending around 9:00-9:30 PM. Weekend day games: First pitch at 2:00 PM, ending around 5:00-5:30 PM. Weekend night games: Same as weekday. Special events (Opening Day, etc.): May start earlier.
Last train considerations
This is crucial for tourists! Last trains in major Japanese cities run between 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM. A 6:00 PM game ending at 9:30 PM gives you plenty of time. However, if a game goes to extra innings and ends at 10:00+ PM, the post-game crowd can make trains very crowded. Plan to leave slightly before the final out if you're worried about trains.
Tips for tourists
Day games are stress-free for scheduling. If attending a night game, know your last train time in advance. Google Maps shows real-time last train information. Consider staying at a hotel near the stadium for night games โ it removes all train stress and lets you enjoy the full post-game atmosphere.
What about rain delays?
Dome stadiums (Tokyo Dome, Kyocera Dome, Vantelin Dome, PayPay Dome, Belluna Dome) never have rain delays. Outdoor stadiums may delay or cancel โ check the team's official website or Twitter on game day. If cancelled, tickets are usually refunded or exchanged.
