What is Golden Week?
Golden Week (April 29 - May 5) is Japan's longest holiday period, combining four national holidays in one week. Many Japanese people travel, and sports leagues schedule extra games to capitalize on the holiday crowds. For tourists, it's one of the best times to watch sports — but also the busiest.
Baseball during Golden Week
NPB schedules games every day during Golden Week, including rare Monday/Tuesday games that don't normally happen. Day games are common since fans are on holiday. Stadiums are packed and festive. Special Golden Week merchandise and food items are released. Book tickets 2-3 weeks in advance — popular matchups sell out.
Soccer during Golden Week
J-League schedules a full round of fixtures during Golden Week. Some clubs hold special family-friendly events. The atmosphere at J-League games during Golden Week is particularly fun because of the holiday mood. Tickets are easier to get than baseball but still book ahead for popular teams.
Basketball
B.League is in its final regular-season stretch or early playoffs during Golden Week. Games have high stakes and intense atmosphere. This is the climax of the basketball season.
Travel considerations
Hotels and shinkansen are significantly more expensive and crowded during Golden Week. Book everything as far in advance as possible. Stadium areas will be busier than usual — arrive earlier than normal. Consider staying near the stadium to avoid crowded trains.
Pro tip
If Golden Week is too crowded for your taste, the week before (April 22-28) and after (May 6-12) have similar weather with much fewer tourists and easier ticket availability. The baseball and soccer seasons are in full swing either way.
