Why you need data at the stadium

Google Maps to find the stadium. Google Translate to read the menu. Instagram to post your stadium food. Score apps to track stats. Messaging apps to coordinate with travel companions. Free Wi-Fi at Japanese stadiums is unreliable when 30,000 people are trying to connect simultaneously.

What is an eSIM

An eSIM is a digital SIM card that you install on your phone before you leave home. No physical card to insert. No SIM tray to pop open. No lining up at an airport counter. You scan a QR code, the eSIM activates, and you have Japanese mobile data the moment your plane lands.

How to get one

Buy online before your trip through travel platforms that sell Japan eSIMs. Options range from 1GB to unlimited data, for 3 to 30 days. Prices start around $5 for basic plans. Unlimited data plans for 7 days cost about $15-25.

Which phones support eSIM

iPhone XS and newer. Google Pixel 3 and newer. Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer. Most phones manufactured after 2020 support eSIM. Check your phone's settings under "Cellular" or "Mobile Data" for an "Add eSIM" option.

At the stadium

Your eSIM data works everywhere in the stadium. Share photos and videos in real time. Use the team's official app for lineups and stats. Look up player information when you can't read the kanji on the scoreboard. Translate food stall menus with your camera.

Practical tips

Buy and install the eSIM before you fly. Test it at the airport when you land. Bring a portable charger since heavy data use drains battery. Most eSIM plans are data-only (no phone calls), which is fine since you'll use messaging apps anyway.

Where to buy

Available through Klook and other travel platforms with instant delivery. Buy it alongside your game tickets and transport passes to have everything ready before you arrive.
