Japan's best-kept secret
Every February, all 12 NPB teams travel to warm-weather locations in Okinawa and Miyazaki for spring training. Most practice sessions are completely FREE to watch. You can see star players up close, get autographs, and enjoy tropical weather while the rest of Japan is freezing.
Where teams train
Okinawa: Giants (Naha), Dragons (Chatan), BayStars (Ginowan), Carp (Okinawa City), Fighters (Nago), Swallows (Urasoe). Miyazaki: Hawks (Miyazaki City), Lions (Hinata), Eagles (Kiyotake), Marines (Ishigaki). Multiple teams are close enough to visit in one day in each location.
What to expect
Morning practice sessions (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM) include batting practice, fielding drills, and bullpen sessions. Afternoon sessions often feature intra-squad games or practice matches against other teams. Players are more accessible than during the regular season โ autographs and photos are common.
Okinawa spring training trip
February in Okinawa is 18-22ยฐC โ perfect weather. Combine spring training with beach visits, Shuri Castle, and Okinawa's unique food culture. Stay in Chatan (American Village area) for easy access to multiple team camps. Rental car recommended.
Miyazaki spring training trip
Miyazaki offers hot springs, stunning coastline, and excellent chicken nanban (the local specialty). Hawks camp in central Miyazaki City is the largest and most organized, with food stalls and merchandise shops set up like a mini festival.
Practical tips
Training schedules are posted on team websites in late January. Arrive early (before 9 AM) for the best viewing spots. Bring sunscreen โ February sun in Okinawa is surprisingly strong. Budget airlines (Peach, Jetstar) offer cheap Tokyo-Okinawa flights from ยฅ5,000 one-way.
