Koshien Stadium Complete Guide: The Cathedral of Japanese Baseball

๐Ÿ“– 8 min read๐Ÿ“้˜ช็ฅž็”ฒๅญๅœ’็ƒๅ ด

Why Koshien is sacred

Koshien Stadium is to Japanese baseball what Wrigley Field is to American baseball โ€” a living shrine to the sport. Built in 1924, it's the oldest baseball stadium in Japan. Home to the Hanshin Tigers and the famous high school baseball tournament, Koshien holds a special place in Japanese culture that transcends sports.

The Tigers atmosphere

Hanshin Tigers fans are the most passionate in NPB. The 47,000-seat stadium becomes a wall of yellow on game days. The noise is deafening, the energy is relentless, and the 7th-inning jet balloon ceremony โ€” where thousands of balloons are released simultaneously โ€” is one of the most spectacular moments in sports.

The famous Koshien Curry

Koshien Curry has been served at the stadium for decades and is a beloved tradition. Simple Japanese curry rice, but eating it at Koshien makes it taste different. The ika-yaki (grilled squid) and jumbo yakitori are also must-tries.

Important etiquette

Never wear another team's merchandise in the Tigers seating area. This is taken very seriously. If you're cheering for the visiting team, buy visitor section tickets. If you're neutral, infield reserved seats are safe territory.

Getting there

Hanshin Railway Koshien Station, 3-minute walk. Just 15 minutes from Osaka Umeda, 20 minutes from Kobe Sannomiya.

High school baseball

If you visit in August, the National High School Baseball Championship (Summer Koshien) transforms the stadium into an emotional spectacle of youth sports. It's free to enter for early-round games and utterly captivating.
