SV.League Guide: How to Watch Professional Volleyball in Japan

Japan's volleyball heritage

Volleyball holds a special place in Japanese sports culture. Japan's women's team won Olympic gold in 1964 (the "Witches of the Orient"), and the sport has remained hugely popular ever since. The anime "Haikyu!!" introduced Japanese volleyball culture to a global audience, making SV.League matches a bucket-list item for anime fans.

What is SV.League?

SV.League (formerly V.League) is Japan's top professional volleyball league, launched in its current format in 2024. Both men's and women's divisions feature corporate-backed teams with professional athletes, many of whom represent Japan internationally.

Season and schedule

SV.League runs from October to April, with most matches on weekends. Unlike baseball and soccer, volleyball matches are held in multi-purpose arenas that can be located in different cities for the same team throughout the season.

Tickets

SV.League tickets are extremely affordable — often ¥1,500-3,000 for general admission. Tickets are available through the SV.League official site or at convenience stores. Games almost never sell out, making it easy to attend on short notice.

What to expect

Matches are held in gymnasiums and arenas seating 3,000-10,000 people. The intimate setting means you're close to the action and can hear the players communicate. Fan sections use drums and coordinated chants similar to soccer. Each set break features entertainment and mascot performances.

Haikyu!! connection

If you're a Haikyu!! fan, watching SV.League brings the anime to life. The synchronized team attacks, powerful jump serves, and libero dives you've seen animated are happening right in front of you in real life.

Best teams and venues

Suntory Sunbirds and Panasonic Panthers are among the top men's teams. JT Marvelous and NEC Red Rockets are women's league powerhouses. Venues vary, so check the schedule for matches near your travel destinations.

Summary

SV.League volleyball is affordable, accessible, and deeply connected to Japanese pop culture through Haikyu!!. It's a unique sports experience that most tourists never discover.
