The ultimate Japanese sports trip
Japan has two things no other country combines as well: professional sports and hot springs. Several stadiums are within an hour of famous onsen towns. Here are the best pairings.
ES CON Field + Jozankei Onsen
50 minutes by car from the stadium. Jozankei is Sapporo's mountain hot spring retreat, set along a river gorge. Book a ryokan (traditional inn) with dinner included. Watch the Fighters, drive to Jozankei, soak in the outdoor bath, eat kaiseki cuisine. Or skip the drive β Tower 11 at ES CON Field has its own hot spring with views of the baseball field.
Koshien + Arima Onsen
40 minutes by train from Koshien Station. Arima is one of Japan's three ancient hot springs. The "gold bath" (iron-rich, reddish-brown water) is unique. Watch the Tigers, train to Arima, stay overnight. Classic Kansai sports trip.
MAZDA Stadium + Miyajima
45 minutes by JR + ferry from Hiroshima Station. Miyajima Island has both the famous floating torii gate and several onsen ryokan. Carp game β ferry to Miyajima β onsen with ocean views β floating torii at sunset.
Rakuten Mobile Park + Akiu Onsen
30 minutes by car from Sendai. Akiu Onsen is Sendai's hot spring retreat with riverside hotels. Eagles game β gyutan dinner β Akiu onsen β next day visit Matsushima Bay. The complete Sendai experience.
