The season starts cold
J-League kicks off in late February. In Tokyo, average temperatures are 5-10Β°C (41-50Β°F). In Sapporo, it's below freezing. Night games feel colder because you're sitting still for 90 minutes. Most fans underestimate how cold it gets.
What to wear
Thermal base layer under your clothes. Down jacket or heavy coat. Gloves and a warm hat. A blanket if you have one. Hand warmers (kairo) from any convenience store for Β₯100. Seat cushion for cold plastic seats. Dress warmer than you think you need.
Stadiums with roof coverage
Saitama Stadium: Large roof covers most main and back stand seats. Panasonic Stadium Suita: Good roof coverage over all stands. Noevir Stadium Kobe: Partial roof. EDION Peace Wing Hiroshima: Modern design with good coverage. Todoroki Stadium: Minimal roof coverage (dress warm).
Why early-season games are good
Ticket availability is better. Teams are testing new signings and tactics. The atmosphere of opening day in February has an anticipation that mid-season games lack. And cherry blossom season (late March to mid-April) overlaps with the J-League calendar, so you can combine both.
Hot food at the stadium
Stadium food vendors serve warm options in cold months: ramen, udon, nikuman (steamed pork buns), hot coffee, and amazake (sweet rice drink). A hot meal makes a cold game much more bearable.
Buying tickets
Early-season tickets are easier to get than mid-season. Buy through J-League ticket platform or team official sites.
