Beer vendor culture

One of the most unique aspects of Japanese baseball is the beer vendor system. Young women (and occasionally men) carry 10-15kg kegs on their backs and walk through the stands, pouring fresh draft beer at your seat. Just raise your hand, and within seconds you'll have a perfectly poured beer. It's efficient, fun, and uniquely Japanese.

How much does beer cost?

Stadium beer prices are typically ¥700-900 for a regular-size draft (about 500ml). This is similar to or slightly cheaper than buying at a bar in Tokyo. Some stadiums offer happy hour pricing before the game. Craft beers are usually ¥800-1,200.

Types of beer available

Standard draft: Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo, or Suntory depending on the stadium sponsor. Most stadiums also offer at least one craft beer option, especially at dedicated craft beer stands. Jingu Stadium (Yakult Swallows) is famous for having the best beer selection in NPB.

Best stadiums for beer

Jingu Stadium: The undisputed champion. Multiple craft options, outdoor atmosphere, and the best beer vendors. MAZDA Stadium (Hiroshima): Local Hiroshima craft beers alongside the standard selections. ES CON Field (Hokkaido): Sapporo beer country — the freshest draft you'll ever taste.

Beer at soccer stadiums

J-League stadiums typically have beer stands rather than roaming vendors. Craft beer is increasingly common. Some stadiums (like Todoroki for Kawasaki Frontale) host craft beer festivals alongside matches.

Important rules

Beer sales stop at the bottom of the 7th inning in baseball. You cannot bring outside alcohol into any stadium. Some stadiums stop selling alcohol after a certain time. Drink responsibly — public drunkenness, while tolerated, is not celebrated in Japan.
