How away sections work in J-League
Every J-League stadium has a designated away supporter section, usually behind one goal. Away tickets are sold through the visiting team's official site. Some matches allocate as few as 500 away tickets; popular derbies may offer 2,000-3,000.
Buying away tickets
Purchase through the away team's website or the J-League ticket platform. Away allocations sell out faster than home tickets for popular matchups. Buy as early as possible.
What to expect in the away end
The away section has its own entrance, usually separate from home fans. You'll be surrounded by committed supporters who traveled to see their team. The singing is constant and intense. Don't wear home team colors in the away section. Don't wander into the home sections wearing away colors.
Best away trips for tourists
Tokyo to Yokohama (30 min)
FC Tokyo or Kawasaki Frontale fans can easily follow their team to Nissan Stadium or vice versa. Short train ride, great city to explore.
Osaka to Kobe (30 min)
Gamba or Cerezo fans heading to Noevir Stadium. Kobe beef dinner after the game makes this the best away trip in J-League.
Any team to Hiroshima
EDION Peace Wing is brand new, the city has incredible food and history, and the Shinkansen makes it accessible from anywhere.
Away trip essentials
Team scarf or jersey (for the away section). Small bag (large bags may not fit in cramped away seating). Cash for food and drinks. Return train ticket booked in advance. Rain gear for outdoor stadiums.
The appeal
Watching football as an away fan in Japan is intense and memorable. The small group of traveling supporters singing together in a hostile stadium creates a bond that home games can't match.
