The joy of the away day
J-League away trips combine two of Japan's greatest strengths: football and travel. With clubs spread across the country from Sapporo to Okinawa, each away match is an opportunity to discover a new city, eat local food, and experience different supporter cultures.
Planning transport
Shinkansen: The backbone of J-League away travel. Tokyo to Sendai (90 min), Osaka (2.5 hours), Hiroshima (4 hours). Japan Rail Pass holders can travel freely. Highway bus: Budget option. Night buses from Tokyo to Osaka start from Β₯3,000. Flights: LCCs (Peach, Jetstar) offer cheap fares to Sapporo, Fukuoka, and Okinawa from Β₯5,000 one-way.
Visitor section tickets
Away tickets are sold through Jleague Ticket or the home club's website. Labeled as 'γγΈγΏγΌθͺη±εΈ' (visitor unreserved). Buy early for popular derbies as visitor allocations are limited. You MUST sit in the visitor section when wearing away team colors.
Accommodation strategy
Book hotels in the city center, not near the stadium. You want access to restaurants and nightlife after the match. Post-match 'after' gatherings at izakaya are a big part of J-League culture β being near the action matters.
Best away trips for tourists
Hiroshima (Peace Park + Sanfrecce). Kyoto (temples + Sanga). Fukuoka (food capital + Avispa). Sendai (history + Vegalta). Each combines world-class tourism with football. Even if your team loses, the city experience makes it worthwhile.
Etiquette
Respect the home club's space. Keep team colors hidden when walking through home supporter areas. Thank local volunteers and staff. Leave the visitor section clean. Be a good ambassador for your club.
